Awards were made to the following people at the WSAVA Congress held in Cape Town:
The WSAVA International Award for Scientific Achievement:
This was presented to Dr Michael Herrtage, Professor of Small Animal Medicine at Cambridge Veterinary School, UK, in recognition of his contribution to small animal internal medicine, especially in endocrinology. Dr Herrtage is a Diplomate of both the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging.
The WSAVA Global Meritorious Service Award:
This was made to Dr Lawson Cairns. Dr Cairns trained in Scotland but has run a practice in Hillcrest, near Durban, for 40 years. He received the award in recognition of the work he has done to raise standards of continuing education (CE) across Africa.
The WSAVA Global One Health Award:
This was made to Professor Lucille Blumberg of the National Institute of Communicable Disease (NICD) in South Africa. She is currently heading the country’s response team to the ebola outbreak in West Africa.
The WSAVA Hill’s Pet Mobility Award:
This was made to Professor Kenneth Johnson, Director of Orthopaedics at the University of Sydney, in recognition of his work in the field of canine and feline orthopaedic medicine and surgery.
The WSAVA Hill’s Excellence in Veterinary Healthcare Award:
This was made to Dr Gen Kato, Director of the Daktari Animal Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, in recognition of his work to promote companion animal healthcare and the family-pet-veterinary bond.
The WSAVA Henry Schein Cares Award for International Community Service:
This was presented to South African vet Annelize Roos, the founder of EnviroVet CNV, a satellite community veterinary clinic under the umbrella of the South African Veterinary Association Community Veterinary Clinics (SAVA).
