The SA Veterinary Council has a program in place to inspect all registered facilities in the country over the next four years or so. A roster has already been set up.
In particular please note the dispensing rules. It is essential that we comply with these as there is constant pressure from government to take dispensing away from veterinarians. We cannot give them ammunition to take this important function away from us.
I will highlight some aspects of the dispensing regulations:
– The dispensary must be a separate dedicated (i.e. not used for any other purpose) room
– Medicine cupboards must be locked at all times if the veterinarian is not present
– Schedule 5 medicines must be locked in a safe
– Only limited quantities of medicine may be stored in the consulting room
– Light, temperature and humidity must be controlled (and recorded)
– The refrigerator used for storing medicines may not be used for any other purpose
– The veterinarian is the only one that can receive (i.e. unpack) medicines delivered from suppliers
Kind regards
