The National Veterinary Clinicians Group of the South African Veterinary Association focuses on the professional needs of companion animal veterinary surgeons. By helping vets become better at what they do, they can in turn provide better service to the public and the pet population of South Africa.
In the veterinary profession companion animals are often referred to as small animal, vs. livestock which is typically referred to as large animals. This terminology may be confusing to members of the public since a small animal will be considered to be a mouse and an elephant will be considered to be a large animal. Over the years the terms used by the veterinary profession as small animal vets have become synonymous with what the public would refer to as pets vets and small animal vets therefore refers to vets who look after dogs, cats, birds and other animals kept as pets as companion animal veterinarians. This is the group of vets who are the members of the National Veterinary Clinicians Group of the South African Veterinary Association. Not all small animal vets belong the National Veterinary Clinicians Group and it will be a good indicator for members of the public to determine if their vets stays up to date with the latest developments in veterinary science by finding out if their vet belongs to the NVCG.
