Prednisolone tablets are no longer available (possibly temporary but we don’t know).
Prednisone tablets are currently available and can be used in dogs, however cats are deficient in the metabolic pathways that convert prednisone to prednisolone.
For cats consider prednisolone syrup if available (Aspelone, Preflam or Prelone). (V-tech is also compounding prednisolone capsules but this could be a challenge in dosing cats.)
Notes from Dr Dave Miller:
CATS:
Medrol is the same as prednisolone in its Mechanism of Action, absorption, etc. and can be used in cats:
- 4 mg Medrol = 5 mg prednisolone
and
- 16 mg Medrol = 20 mg prednisolone
So for cats, use Medrol as for prednisolone [and it even has slightly less side effects and easier to dispense as comes in sheets of 10]
DOGS:
Can use Medrol or prednisolone or prednisone on your dogs
- Medrol might have less side effects and remember 4 mg medrol = 5 mg pred
- [I like Medrol in bigger dogs because for itchy dogs I use it at ½ to 1 16 mg tab /20 kg BW for itch vs 4 pred tabs]
